Derek Russell, born in 1985, lives and works out of his studio in the mountains of New Hampshire. His areas of interest include painting, health and wellness, self-development, adventure, travel, higher consciousness, architecture, sports, and engineering. He is married to Kara and shares his love for her daily.

His craving for adventure started in college when he began traveling and exploring the beauty of the world and its amazing people, places and experiences. He loves the feeling of living in a beautiful state.

The foundation for his art is grounded in a decade long interaction with the art of realism. Researching and learning the techniques of the old masters, he felt a calling to express himself with paint. For over 10 years, he would draw and paint in a very slow, precise, and photorealistic way. An internal struggle to make his work perfect fought with his desire to paint. And he stopped creating art for years.

This transition gave him the opportunity to work on multi-million dollar construction projects from the ground up as a superintendent and owner’s representative. His notable projects include: a Fine Art Studio Addition & Renovation ($7.5MM), an Art Gallery Addition & Renovation ($4.5MM), a Community Center ($9.5MM) and a Hospital Addition & Renovation ($40MM). He has continually opened doors when others see brick walls.

During this time, he gained a better understanding of himself and felt a calling to start expressing himself again through painting. His passion lies in creating paintings that capture your attention and energize you.

After an intensive yearlong study under a Copley Art Master, he began to tell visual stories with the live models he painted.

He quieted his analytical mind and let the colors speak to him. He commands and tunes into his subconscious mind to channel the energy of his subjects. He coined the term “Free Spirited Realism” as a brand for his art. It is a dance between contemporary art and realism.

When viewing his work at a close range, areas are broken up and fit together only at a distance. As you advance toward his painting, it becomes more abstract, more fluid, and as you move away, it falls into focus and is realistic. At no two distances will the painting appear the same.

He has developed a dynamic way of combining abstraction with realism. In this technique, he is able to make the action within the painting as intense and exciting as it actually is in your direct experience.

With his brush, he celebrates the amazing people, the greatest sports moments and the beautiful places in the world with an explosion of bold, vibrant color. His wish is to inspire you to enjoy the moment and appreciate the beauty of life.

Derek Russell has paintings on display in several public collections across the United States, and private collectors from over 34 states, including 2 U.S. Virgin Islands and 7 countries. Several of his paintings have been gifted to influential innovators and celebrities.
