Lindsay & Stuart - Outdoor Wedding Painting - Bend, Oregon

Tying the knot under the stars of beautiful Bend, Oregon, this happy couple did it right. They celebrated and shared their moment with family and friends in the great outdoors. To commemorate this special day, her (now favorite) sister and brother, searched near and far for an artist whose paintings they loved and style they admired.

And that's where I come into this love story.

Haley contacted me (in secret) - all the way from Switzerland - about a painting for her sister. Our adventurous spirits connected as she excitedly recapped that joyous day. Her poetic words echoed truth and beauty.

My mission was clear:  capture the essence of the day, the love of Lindsay & Stuart, and the happiness shared by all and put it into a memorable painting to remind them everyday of the bond and connection they have together.

I tuned into my divine creative force and let the alchemy happen.

And it completely blew them away.

In fact, this was the response I got back, "Oh my gosh. I'm almost in tears. It is perfect!!!!!! You are very talented and the style of painting is exactly what I was looking for!!!!!"

Thanks Haley & Jacob! It was a honor for me to be chosen as the artist to capture your sister's wedding in paint. Thank you for your trust, faith and vision.

I'd also like to send a shout out to their amazing wedding photographer, Erin Grace. Thank you for your genius on their wedding day and for opening up your closed, private gallery for me to gain inspiration. You rock!

Let the memories & love continue

the ultimate question, why?

the other night i was curled up in a blanket with my wife, kara, chatting + sipping tea - sounds charming, i know. we don't have a tv so it's what we do. and yes, we actually enjoy this time together without the television.

anyways, i happened upon an article while surfing my news feed earlier that day and shared with her what the cheapest countries were to live in. i was shocked at how low the cost of living was in some countries. $70/month rent to live in a one bedroom apartment in nepal? and only $50/month for heat, electricity, water & trash?

man, i could move there and live for an entire year for what it costs to rent here for one month! that's how they do it i exclaimed to her.

a sad expression formed on her face, I'm confused, i thought we were looking for a house?

and this was our opportunity to connect

we opened up about our feelings. what we wanted? what we needed? and then we let down our guards and voiced our fears. i confessed my fears of security and money. and how i wanted to make sure we lived the life we wanted but wasn't sure how to do it. and the fear of not having the time to experience everything i want to do. i put it all out there in the open - something i've been afraid to do in the past. it felt so good to bond with her. to really share my deepest fears & feel her support back for me. she poured her heart right back, and we shared a really special moment.

and we did something unexpected!

we exposed what i believe is the ultimate question, why? why do we do the things we do?

kara's eyes sparkled - i love when they do this by the way, "love is the answer"

i almost fell over when i heard her say those words, literally i was stunned.

no, not because i disagreed with her but more - i completely agreed with her!

i ran to get my computer.

i pointed at the screen, i wrote those exact words on my homepage earlier that day "love is the answer"

this is why i do what i do - love!

that's us on our honeymoon. i love you kara

that's us on our honeymoon. i love you kara

i’d love to hear why you’re doing what you're doing. please leave me a comment below.

and as always, thank you in advance for sharing with such compassion and insight. so many souls come here each week for inspiration and support, and you never fail to deliver.

with love + excitement,

an opportunity in disguise

it may have taken me a couple of months to figure out. i was confused. but i knew i must be patient. with all the books on self-help that i've read over the years, i knew the answers lie within me. i know i am in the right place at the right time. i know there is always something i need to be learning.

i recently moved into an apartment with my fiance and now, my drive to my engineering job has tripled. i'm commuting 55 miles each way to sit behind a desk, to push paperwork and wait for the clock to tick. when the hour hand lands on 4, i'm out the door, thankful for another day i can check off in the books.

but this approach to life is demoralizing for me. and for some odd reason, it makes me angry and unhappy. i know so many people who would love to hold this position. but if i'm not happy, not excited for life, where is the passion in that! and then to sit in a box for over 2 hours each day driving to yet another box - it takes a toll on me!

but i knew there must be a lesson hiding in the midst. and finally it hit me.

i realized i was not utilizing my time effectively. in order for me to stay sane, i knew i needed to educate myself. i can gain over 2 hours each day to improving my life. this simple awakening is a blessing. i could have been studying 2 hours each day prior to the drive, but i wasn't. i found better things to be doing. i found life was easy. why change when something is easy.

so yes, i look forward to my commute where i can learn and grow with each day. before i dreaded driving that long. i was angry for having to be stuck driving what felt like all day. the trick is when you are not happy with certain aspects in your life, do something about it. take action in that very moment where you feel the anger. know there is a purpose for everything that happens. know that with each wall there is a door or window to go through. find the path and stay focused.

Please leave a comment below and tell me about an opportunity you took advantage of...

4am calling

do you ever wake up early in the morning and wonder why in the world you awake at this hour of the day?

i know i used too.

i say used too, because i'm discovering the beauty of the early morning, when the world around me is quiet and there are no distractions. i enjoy this quiet time when nothing is going on.

today i jumped back into my meditation practice at 4:30am. i sat crossed legged for 40 minutes on the end of my yoga mat (trying to sit still and quiet my mind). it was extremely difficult to just sit there. thoughts streamed through my mind. my body ached with pain. my lower back screamed in agony, yet i continued. i know i must work through the pain and beyond the thoughts - it is good training for me. it is preparing me. why?

well, there are a couple of reasons; 1. i have this feeling deep within me that says i must do it if i want to manifest my desires, 2. i've read many books by famous authors and listened to many interviews in which meditation is said to be one of the most beneficial things you can do for yourself. and it is best to practice first thing in the morning.

i'm dedicated to making this commitment. i am fulfilling my destiny.

getting into the gap between my thoughts at 4am may sound crazy but it is a time when i hear my soul speaking directly to me. and i like that flow of love. my soul brings me gifts of abundance that are unexpected.

letting the voices come out

i couldn't sleep last night. my head was pounding. and it wouldn't quit! and then all i heard were voices. get up. write. this is your time. we are here with you. ok that's kinda freaky, but i'm totally down! i can feel this shift in my body

let go...let go of the fear within you! let it float away. it no longer serves you. you do not need it. you feel ease. an entire weight has been removed from your body.

this is the first time i am writing about these voices i'm hearing. i can sense the voices waking me up. my body says i'm tired but my heart says keep writing. why would i do this? what is it? something is getting released. my fear.

an engineer by training, i'm not satisfied with that path. i do not feel fulfilled. why waste an entire life living the "shoulds" and "supposed to" rules? who made these rules anyway? i'm sick of following everyone else's rules that only help them! listen to us. we will guide you.

let go of the fear and ego. their battle will never end until you let it

over the years i've become attached to this fear and ego driven banter that i now recognize echoing away in my mind. i'm scared of being wrong. i'm afraid of failure. i am pursuing my dreams. i am a creative! i am soulful! i am abundant!

the truth will set you free.

About Derek Russell

Russell, born 1985, lives and works in the mountains of New Hampshire. His areas of interest include painting, health and wellness, higher consciousness, architecture, growth mindset, engineering, travel, sports, and adventure. And he is happily married to his wife, Kara.

His love for adventure started in college when he began traveling and exploring the beauty of the world and its amazing people, places and experiences. This is the energy he captures in each of his pieces.

The foundation for his art is grounded in a decade long interaction with the art of realism. Researching and learning the techniques of the old masters, he felt a calling to express himself with paint. For over 10 years, he continued to draw and paint in a very slow and precise way. An internal struggle to make his work perfect fought with his desire to paint. And he stopped for years.

After an intensive yearlong study under a Copley Art Master, his awareness changed. By engaging in a visual story with the live models he painted, he needed to paint faster.

And then one day, it clicked for him.

He put aside his analytical mind and let the colors speak to him. He coined the term “Free Spirited Realism” as a brand for his art. It is a dance between contemporary art and realism.

When viewing his work at a close range, areas are broken up and fit together only at a distance. As you advance toward his painting, it becomes more abstract, more fluid, and as you move away, it falls into focus and is realistic. At no two distances will the painting appear the same.

He has developed a dynamic way of combining abstraction with realism. In this technique, he is able to make the action within the painting as intense and exciting as it actually is in your direct experience.

He creates meaningful, engaging stories with a shower of bold, vibrant color that inspire people to open their minds and make a positive impact on the world.

Today, his art is collected in several countries around the world.
